very pleased Review by
I've not used it a lot, its an emergency generator and I've not had an emergency yet. However, I could not be happier with the choice in buying the DeWalt generator .It has all the features I wanted, especially the large fuel tank. It starts well, runs well, has tons of output, and appears to be well made. I do wish they were Australian made though. It's a beast! bigger than I thought but still quite portable. I feel a greater sense of security as we head into darker times knowing that our lights and fridge will still be running.

Great value home back-up Review by
Excellent value for money. This is a work generator that can be used as a back-up generator to power your home in the event of an outage, providing you understand its limitations. You can’t power the whole house with this thing if you have split systems, electric oven, electric water heater and you’re wfh as a welder etc. But if you want to have lights, fridges, TV, wi-fi, heating controller, kettle, microwave etc running then this will suffice. It has a voltage regulator so your appliances are protected but it is earthed as a remote work-site generator. To work with your home a sparky will need to disconnect the earth leakage system on the generator and if you ever use the generator away from home (eg, with your caravan) you’ll need to re-connect it. However, how to do so isn’t obvious and the circuit diagrams in the manual don’t show you. You need to unscrew and remove the front panel to get at the NEM connection - get a sparky! With a simple 25amp transfer switch wired in to your circuit board this generator gives you a very cost effective emergency solution for annoying power outages. If it’s a multi-day outage you won’t have hot water, an electric oven, or air conditioning but you won’t be cooking on your camp stove by candlelight either. For just over $2k with a further $800 to $1000 for fitting a transfer switch you’ll have a solid power supply for 20% or less of the cost you’d pay for a full, 40amp, system to match your electricity supplier. So, it’s a compromise. Be sure you know what you want but if it’s the easiest and most cost effective system to give you the basics and protect your frozen goods then this set-up can’t be beaten. In this regard, this generator is a real gem!

Great product - read the fine print Review by
Like most I did my research and found this generator to be great value. I wanted an 8.9kVA to run at 50% and power home during long blackouts is days. Generator is great for advertised use as workplace generator but comes with a couple of install catches when connecting to home power board. As worksite generator it comes with earth leakage that does not work with home earth leakage. It’s in the fine print so get a good sparky. 8.9kVA gives you 25A not 2x 25A - so you can’t can’t run at 30A without damaging the geni, voiding warranty and tripping the breakers. I connected one 15A to the house and ran an extension cord for the other. A good device but read the fine print for whole of house use.

Powers the whole house! Review by
I live in an area prone to power outages that can last a few days. I'd been researching generators a lot and stumbled across this one from DeWalt. Took the plunge and couldn't be happier. It was shipped within in a few days from the warehouse and delivered with only a minor hiccup which had nothing to do with MyGenerator. I set the generator up and it literally started first go. Had and appliance outlet and manual transfer switch installed by a sparky and he commented on the size and quality of the generator. Generator sufficiently powers my home (within moderation) without issue. A great option for anyone looking for something slightly larger.

Good generator, good value, fast delivery Review by
Works well, does the job and then some. Easy pull start, even easier key turn start. Battery housing modifications are minor and easily done (as others have commented). I don't really trust the fuel gauge as it always says empty. Overall very happy as generator has the WHS requirements which work as they should.

Great product, good price, amazing service Review by
Generator looks great and electrician has no issues installing as part of back-up house power supply. The battery holder needed to be modified (mentioned in previous reviews) however I just bent it out in a vice which was fine (and i'm not handy!). Great having it on wheels and handles to easily move around. Hasn't been used really yet, but tested fine when electrician commissioned it.

Good value. Review by
For me its a back up generator so I was after something suitable for intermittent use. So far it has performed well although I had to modify the battery holder to make the battery fit.

Product Q&A

Ask Us a Question
  • Is this a good generator for home power backup?

Hi and thanks for your question; yes, this brand and this size generator is popular for home backup use, especially if you intend to run quite a few appliances including those with larger power draw such as; washing machines, larger fridge/freezers, pumps, small to medium sized air-conditioners etc. along with all your other smaller household appliances as well.

You can either run your required appliances directly from the generator (via extension chords etc.), or speak to an electrician about installing manual transfer switch to your home so the generator then becomes the power backup source to your house. Another option again, is to consider an auto-start generator which can also be connected to your house mains via an electrician; these type of generators will automatically restore power to your home in the event of a blackout, as opposed to manually switching the generator on.

In all cases, just be sure you know how much power all your appliances you intend to run will draw so you get the right sized generator. Thanks, Steve.

  • I'm considering this generator for home backup. How much is it to get an electrician to fit a transfer switch to my home so this generator can power (part) of my house during a blackout?

Hi Anthony, great question. You've certainly identified a popular generator model for home backup power. In terms of cost for an electrician to install a transfer switch to your home, the short answer is; it depends. Not every home install is identical in terms of works required, switch configurations etc.

However, to give you an idea, click HERE for a video from a My Generator customer who had a local electrician install a transfer switch to enable the power supply to their house to be transferred to a portable generator when there is a mains blackout. You can see from the video that the transfer switch install cost was around $600. We would suggest this is a pretty good price, and perhaps indicative of a straightforward install job. We have heard of higher install costs than this for other jobs, usually requiring more configuration works.

My advice would be to get a quote from your local electrician. They can also help advise what size generator best fits your particular home backup requirements. Many thanks!

  • Along with running fridges, water pumps, lights etc, is this generator also fine to power up wifi, tv, charge laptops / phones etc?

Hi, this generator is fitted with an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator), meaning it reduces the voltage fluctuation to +/- 2.5%, making it suitable to run all your domestic appliances, including the items you have listed. The Yamaha EF7200E is our most popular model for household backup power and other models in that 6to 9kVA range fitted with AVR from the likes of DeWalt and Pramac are also very good. Many thanks

  • How is it that this generator has 15Amp outlets, but the generator's power rating is greater than 15Amps? (as 15Amps equates to 3600watts on a 240Volt appliance). Presumably you can get more than 15Amps out of the outlets then?

Yes, that is correct. A 15 Amp outlet can deliver more power than 15 Amps for a short period, as there is no circuit breaker fitted to the generator as standard. You can briefly pull the full rated power amount of the generator (continuous and maximum) through the 15 Amp outlet.. noting that this is only for a short time - i.e. when you are first starting up an appliance such as a comprossor, drop saw, air conditioner etc. it may draw around 30 Amps (as an example) to start up, and then drop back down to 10 Amps to keep running.

However, if your appliance draws more than 15 Amps continuously, it is not recommended you run it for prolonged periods from a 15 Amp outlet, as it is likely to result in overheating issues. It may be prudent to consider re-fitting the outlets to a larger size to fit your continuous power requirement (i.e. 20 Amp, or 32 Amp outlet for example) - this can be configured upon request at extra cost. Thank you.

  • What engine oil should I use with this Generator?

Hi - the generator requires standard engine oil;  either 10W-30 or 10W-40.

This is available from any local service station. Many thanks

  • Hi i am looking for an 8kva generator to run a small 140 amp welder on a rural property is this suitable to run a welder or angle grinder obviously not at the same time if not can u recommend one that will in similar price range

Hi - Yes as a general rule of thumb we would recommend an 8KVA generator to run a 140-180 amp welder.

  • Can I use this generator to charge my power tool batteries?

    Hi there,

Charging battery packs is fine from a conventional generator, we'd recommend having a steady load on the generator and don't connect appliances that will cause the load to jump around during charging.

    Thanks.

  • hi, what engine do these DeWalt generators use? what is the parts and service availability like for these engines here in Australia?8.95kVA AVR generator sounds like great value for $2000. is there a catch?i really like the specs of the yamaha 6kVA un

    Hi There,

They use a generic engine, but are very good quality generators.

As a backup generator, their value for money is great.

The welder should be just fine on the DeWALT as well!

  • Would this generator be suitable for off grid solar backup.

    Hi There,

This generator should work for off grid solar backup without issue. The only downside is that it does not have automatic starting and would need to to turned on manually when you require charging of the batteries.

You would need to make sure how much power your invertercharger requires to determine if the size is suitable.

  • What is the noise rating of this model and also the weight.I plan to do some light welding, not continuous, stop start max 2min each weld. In your opinion do you think this would be ok?

    Hi There,

We do not have an official noise rating but this generator would be producing around 70+dBA @ 7m.

Whether or not you can use it for welding would depend on the size welder you are using.

180A or below should be just fine.

  • Hi can you please confirm how the wheels are attached to the main body, are there metal axle rods or pins or both?

    HI There

The attachment of the wheels is a combination of rods and split pins to secure the wheels to the frame.

You can see the attachment in this image:

    Dewalt

  • Can a 30A single phase de-contactor type outlet be installed by you before delivery? The unit is to be connected to a residential switchboard via a 6 square mm flexible extension lead with de-contactor plugs and sockets.

Unfortunately not, these unit are sent as standard from the warehouse.
