Product Description

Yamaha EF2800i, 2800w Inverter Generator, 4 Year Warranty.Built within a compact and robust frame, the Yamaha EF2800i Inverter Generator is one of the most versatile units in the Yamaha range. Its imposing maximum output of 2800 watts is accompanied with market leading features to ensure its operation is fuel efficient and extremely reliable.

Firstly, a massive 11.2 litre tank means you can get 17 hours run time at a quarter load. Complimenting this, the Yamaha smart throttle technology maximises fuel efficiency by adjusting the engine speed directly in line with the output requirements.

Secondly, the generator’s inverter system produces clean power output, so it is safe to run any sensitive electronic equipment like, smart phones, computers and TV’s. All this comes within an efficiently sized unit weighing under 30 kilograms.

Typically generators of this tough, metal-framed design do not have inverter and smart throttle technology and are only suitable for running heavier power equipment… but the Yamaha EF2800i is far more accommodating to such a range of uses, including; camping, caravanning, outdoor events/functions, domestic backup, as well as trade and agricultural tasks.

We recommend this unit for customers requiring an inverter generator to run appliances for longer periods, such as their fridge/freezers when there is a blackout for a day or more. Also very popular for those intending to use their generator for more than one application; i.e. recreational uses as well as for work purposes or domestic backup.

Considered to be a smart choice in the premium inverter generator range given it delivers 2800 watts maximum and is priced for under $2,800. Complete with a four year warranty and additional safety features including low oil alert to prevent engine damage, this unit will provide you reliable portable power for many, many years to come.

FEATURES AT A GLANCE:

  • Inverter system voltage regulator producing clean power
  • Easy recoil start assisted by auto decompressor
  • Safety features: electronic circuit breaker system and low oil alert
  • Noise level suppressor and inbuilt muffler for quiet operation

Excellent product for Home back-up power supply Review by
Purchased a few years back from MyGenerator for a home b/up power supply during storm season in QLD. Neighbours very jealous during power blackout. Minutes to set up via transfer switch (Electrician Install) and runs everything we need (TV's, Internet, 2 x Fridges, ceiling fans, LED Lights) even a small A/C unit in kid's bedroom all at once. Powerful little unit. Will run for ages on a tank of fuel. Auto throttle response feature is fantastic and will ramp up or down depending on appliance load.

I have not used the generator as yet but have tested it. A little confused as to what and if I need to apply a earthing rod to the generator as instructions are unclear.

Great generator. Review by
It's a great little generator it's not too big and not too heavy but he has plenty of power. It starts really easy and is a lot quieter than I expected. I had a bit of trouble with the delivery company but Daniel from my generator was very helpful, thanks.

A little beast! Review by
I use this unit to charge off grid solar batteries. I spent a long time balancing quality, size, noise and price of different units and glad that i settled on this one. Originally i wanted a bigger unit worried that something this size would work too hard over a long winter periods. Compared to my previous gennie - a cheaper version of roughly the same output - the difference is night and day. The yammie is much quieter, distinctly more efficient, lighter and easier to start, but most importantly the output wave is so clean that the electronics within the solar charger allow the batteries to charge faster. It also doesnt trip the breaker like the previous unit. So it seems apples aint apples. Its a tad louder than the honda eu2200, but it also handles much more work too. Long stort short you dont need a 5kva unit for solar backup, as i was led to believe. Tops little unit, pricey but worth it.

Quality generator in a small package Review by
Purchasing a generator for our caravan is something you need to get right first time - for performance and cost. I read hundreds of reviews for portable generators, having owned larger ones on my farm over many years. I remained concerned that the generator be compact but, at the same time, I wanted to be sure that the generator could handle the load from appliances such as 240 volt AC. While many of the Generators on the market are rated at 2000 watts, a surprising number of reviews indicated that this was not quite enough capacity to handle the loads applied, especially for 240 volt AC - so I started to look for a generator that would be quiet, not too heavy, small enough to fit on a slide and that would have sufficient power for my van's appliances.I have owned Honda generators before and like their reliability but this Yamaha model rates exceptionally for capacity and price. It works well in my caravan and is quiet, fuel efficient (with a much larger tank than most portable models), it is not too heavy and it meets the power needs well. Basically, it ticks all the boxes, including many that slightly lower rated portable generators do not.

Yamaha EF2800i - Excellent! Review by
We are off the grid. Generator is used to supplement small, home made solar system. House is wired for AC, so we attach generator to house power board and run dishwasher and front loader washing machine. Runs these appliances well. Also, used to charge batteries when required etc.. Starts easily. Started 1st pull once filled with oil and fuel. Generally, starts by 2 pulls. Runs reasonably quietly. Very pleased with purchase. Hope and expect to receive long and reliable service from this generator. Good 4 years warranty. Negative - the combination security cable is a bit embarrassing! Will not be using it to secure any item of value.

Excellent service, excellent generator Review by
Using the generator for a power back up at a bush farm. Tried the generator out, easy instructions. Powered two fridge/freezers, lights, TV etc. Has an economy load function which meant generator revved up when switching on high watt items - microwave, kettle. Very pleased with product.

Xclnt gennie Review by
I have used portable and fixed in-situ generators in Oz and remote Pacific Islands since late 1960s. This Yamaha 2800 EF invertor generator, in my opinion, has to be one of the best, efficient, dependable, compact, value for money small portable gennies I have owned. Highly recommended for standby in times of cyclones etc... we have rooftop solar which is very dependable but haven’t installed powerwalls. This Yammy supplements our power needs and ensures our DOT NBN is powered and also ensures power to charge 12V deep cycle batteries for standby fridges, freezers etc. great sense of standby security. 5/5. Follow the instruction manual, pls. Brian.

Couldn't be more satisfied Review by
Wanted back up power for home in storm season. The Yamaha 2800w works a treat. Will run all lights (LEDs) fridge, TV, computer and sealing fans no problem for hours without refueling. More than enough power for remote camping requirements.

So far so good Review by
Used twice since purchase on two power outages and it performed really well. Last night's outage lasted 10 hours and it ran the full household flawlessly. In my opinion Yamaha=efficiency and piece of mind. My older 1kva Yamaha is now 25years old and being well used still gives great service. I feel confident this one will be even better....

Reliable, Quiet, Run time is fantastic Review by
I've upgraded my switchboard so I can connect the generator to my house. The number of appliances we can run is amazing. Two freezers, two fridges, ceiling fans throughout the house and even our washing machine. The long run time on a single tank is fantastic and the additional 240v outlet comes in really handy. The build quality and reliability is outstanding. Anyone buying this generator will not be disappointed.

2800 inverter generator Review by
Great unit, my old generator broke down while I was visiting my daughter in Sedan SA , l went to Bunnings in Murray Bride and purchased a Full Boar 2200kva generator, when starting this unit up it didn’t have enough KVAs to run my air conditioner. I returned it to Bunnings for a credit. My wife was in Perth and googled My Generators on line and said that the reviews on the Yamaha were good. She wanted me to buy a 2400kva Yamaha. In the end we bought the 2800 inverter and this does everything we need to run, it’ll even run the air and hot water system at the same time . GREAT UNIT. Regards Pieter Lips. WA

Perfect for Us but Read the Instructions First. Review by
We're on acreage in the Blue Mountains and prone to all manner of weather (rain, thunderstorms, hail, bush fires etc) and power failures (scheduled and unscheduled). Last month, we were notified by our local Electricity company that power to our street would be out for 8 hours. We hooked up the Yamaha 2800w (as we'd done with our previous genie)........gave it a rip.......and...nothing. My husband and I eventually read the manual (duh!) and had to flip this up and switch that this way and gave it another rip...and worked first time, humming away very nicely (much quieter then our previous genie). This easily powered up 2 large fridges, 1 bar freezer, the washing machine (I was mid spin cycle before I remembered the power was going off!), our coffee percolator, nutri-bullet and my husbands iphone. There was no impact on the performance of the generator during the outage. After power was restored 8 hours later, we checked the petrol usage in the genie and it was still 75% full. So efficient! We have another scheduled 8 hour outage next month so we're confident that the Yamaha 2800w will see us through again. We're very happy with our purchase. Highly recommended.

Only used once, but it has demonstrated its ability to "top up" my solar batteries and drive my workshop tools. Its ability to vary the output according to the demand is ideal for staged charging of the batteries down to "float" charge.

Wow Review by
Wow, Unpacked the Generator out of the very secure shipping box. Gave it a check over as per the Instructions Manual. Filled crankcase with the Yamaha lube oil to the correct level supplied. Checked air cleaner. Filled the fuel tank with unleaded fuel. Gave it two pulls, and away it went. Let it run for a couple of minutes to make sure that it was all good. Then plugged into my Caravan, started the Air Conditioning, then Fridge, lights, all good. Heaps of Power. Shut it all down and let my Wife start it, I pull and it was away. She couldn't believe how easy it was. Also very light to lift up Into the back of my Landcruiser. I was looking at the Honda EFI2200 before I Purchased the YAMAHA EF2800I, sure glad that I looked at the YAMAHA before I made my decision. Guys, Check them out before you buy a Generator. Don't be fooled by the other compact options, this Generator is not much bigger or heavier than the compact style models, and has tonnes of Power, Bigger fuel tank, is an Inverter. Just check them out "FIRST" before you buy a Generator.

Does the job Review by
I had a Honda 20 generator would run the air conditioner only with everything turned off, I was advised to buy a bigger generator, my mistake I bought a cheap Chinese did not run the air con at all supposed to be 3.7kw, gave it to my son in law to charge the batteries in his boat. I decided to buy the Yamaha, I hooked it up to caravan same as mains power, the air fired up immediately so far no problems.

Good tidy easy to start machine runs quietly Review by
Relatively light weight it started first pull after filling it with oil, and ran smoothly and quietly. The oil filling required a little ingenuity but was easy with a funnel and a bit of hose. The instruction manual is simple to follow. I'm waiting for a power outage to give it a good workout and living in South Australia it shouldn't be long.

Nice compact, quiet little unit that suits my purpose admirably. I am a shipwright needing a portable power source that can be easily moved from job to job. We wanted to purchase a generator in case of severe outages and purchased this model from My Generator. It was so easy. We price compared and found this to be the best model for value for money. We can rest easy knowing that we are covered in hot weather for our freezers and at least one air conditioner if we have a power failure. We recommended this product to our daughter and son in law and they also purchased one for their caravan.

Easy to start, big fuel capacity for extended use. Review by
Purchased for emergency home use, I wanted a very reliable generator that is easy to start, and has a large fuel capacity to carry us through extended power outages. This Generator fits these requirements admirably. Yamaha has a reputation for build quality which we have come to expect from products manufactured in Japan. This generator should run our refrigerator, freezer and lights to carry us through most power outages for the duration that we have experienced recently.

Hi, after reading reviews on caravan forums I decided to opt for the 2.8 Yamaha. One main reason being the fuel tank size & running time. Our van is 10yrs old with a dometic a/c. The generator runs the van no problem. I added oil and fuel, first pull it started. The 4 year warranty was a bonus.

I opted for the Yamaha 2800 and have found it easy to set-up, use, and with enough to power my critical home loads (water pump, fridges, freezer and Wi-Fi) during a power outage. It's not the priciest, but neither is it the cheapest. It's noisy enough that I wouldn't want to use it caravanning, but is fine for at home use where I can position it outside away from people.

Top service and trusted products. Review by
Beautiful build quality and components. Reasonably quiet for this style of generator. Great fuel tank size for those that don't want to feed their aux power every few hours. Could have a few more features such as volt/hour meter and power outlet on/off switch, but its simplicity is attractive too. Robust, with modern technology. Almost looking forward to a power outage to put it through it's paces : )

great all round generator Review by
This generator is used as an auxiliary power supply(to solar) to a residential mineral claim in the opal bearing area of lightning ridge, it is used every day for approx 5hrs, it powers a heavy duty battery charger as well as running a 1300watt PC gaming rig, tv & lights etc, it has more than ample power for these needs, it is a quiet generator for its size & when run in economy mode it is really very quiet compared to the other standard honda 2.5kva generators used in the past, I would recommend this generator

The power you need to run your caravan and accesso Review by
I recently purchased a caravan and was confidently informed by the salesman that the Honda 2.0 EU20i had enough grunt to run the air conditioner and other accessories on the van in the humidity and heat of the far north. I checked into this with the manufacturer and was informed a 2.0 kva generator wasn't big enought for the air conditioning unit in those conditions. I therefore purchased the Yamaha 2800w Inverter as it does have the grunt to run everything at once, has a good sized fuel tank that gives us between 10-11 hours before refuelling. The power supply is smooth and constant and has never let us down. This is the generator I would recommend to new caravanner's want their gear to work when needed!

Why did l wait so long?? Review by
I had reviewed generators for far too long. It came down to Honda Vs Yamaha. This little generator was equal to the Honda in all respects except price. WOW!! what a difference. This generator was purchased to backup the house when power outages occur, run the fridge, boil the kettle, run a water pump for the house and microwave for meals. It does all that very well. Its also portable enough to take camping. (Fridge, music, lights and sandwich maker.) I am very happy with the generator.

Excellent product and mygenerator's service couldn Review by
I bought the 2800 EF as a back up generator for my gooseneck horse float to power 240V fridge Ibis Air command air conditioner and microwave. I had to use it last weekend at a campdraft and it did all the above all at once, no problems. It is noisier than the fully covered 3000EF and 2400EF but it cant be heard once it is away 20 meters or so it cant be heard very much and from inside the float cant be heard at all. The run time is nothing short of fantastic a big tank but still runs for 17+ hours with A/C and fridge on all the time. Starts first or second pull from the moment it came out of the box and I filled it up with oil.

Fantastic gererator with heaps of power Review by
We compared prices and types of generators before deciding to buy the Yamaha 2800w. My Generator had the best deal. Needed a bigger generator to run the air con in my caravan plus other electrical items at the same time ie battery charger, microwave. I spoke to the my generator sales person who was very helpful. This generator runs everything we hoped it would easily. The extra bonus is that it actually runs everything only using the lowest power setting. This makes it very economical and quiet. Very glad we decided to buy a generator with extra power rather than running a smaller machine flat out.

Good Quality Generator That Simply Does What It Sh Review by
Easy Start, Lightweight for its output, simple to use and for its size its bloody quiet. Not quite sure of who buys a unit like this and then says its noisy - its extremely quiet and compared to the other brand including the Honda's I think its much quieter - unreal expectations by people I think, This Yamaha is so easy to start and in the long run much better reliability and less noise plus you get a fuel isolation valve which really does come in very handy. If you want the best value for money generator that will see you through get on of these - you won't be sorry - unless of course you have already bought a Honda or a cheap Chinese copy POS!!!

Great generator and excellent service Review by
After recent storms in our region resulted in lengthy power outages lasting many days, I wanted to get a reliable generator for house hold power back up with sufficient capacity to run separate fridge and freezer cycling on and off as a minimum requirement. Also wanted a fuel tank of sufficient size to allow the generator to run throughout the night . This unit has all of that and more. Started first go. Very happy.

Product good overall though a little noisy Review by
Prior to purchasing this product I researched generators. The price range for this power range varies considerably. While I am happy with the performance of the generator as it powered 2 fridges and freezers without any trouble, I didn't expect it to be quite that noisy but when you have no power it doesn't seem all that important. Overall a good product so far...

Hard to fault really, but when its working harder to provide power to start the fridge compressor the noise is noticeable. Other than that I am very happy and it's delivered everytime I've needed. Provides great fuel economy.

Good easy to operate and value for money. Review by
Pros: I compared this generator extensively to others on the market prior to purchase. I found it to be good value compared to rival products of similar specifications. So far it has lived up to expectations. It allows me usage over a wide range of applications including power tools. It is well constructed and easy to operate. The long running time is a definite bonus. Cons: It is a little on the noisy side should you wish to use it at a camp site. A remote control would be of benefit. Ric

I've run this unit for around 10-11 hours a time for my dam pump and have also used it to keep the fridges running when the power is out. Most other units this size don't have the run time, so this one gets my vote. Starts for me every time, no issues.

Product Q&A

Ask Us a Question
  • Hi there, I'm considering a Yamaha, but have noticed several other 'generic' generator brands for around a third of the price and offer similar specs. What's driving the price difference?

Great question Craig, thank you! Some lesser known brands have their place, really only for people who will use their generator infrequently - in which case you can save some money. Then there are also many cheap brands out there that are a good chance to break down on your first starting attempt!

With Yamaha, firstly - their specs are superior; not only are they the quietest and lightest inverter generators in the market, they are also built to handle more intensive, frequent operation. So with a Yamaha, you know it is going to handle your power demands easily and you can use your unit for multiple applications if required; recreation, home power backup, small business, events etc. It is the premium inverter generator brand in the market.

Secondly, with a Yamaha you get a 4-year warranty (which is much longer than the cheap brands) and you get the support of over 200 accredited service agents around the country. Our experience is that the Yamaha after sales support, servicing and parts support is excellent. You don't get a national service network with the cheap brands.

Hope that help explains the price difference, cheers, Steve!

  • Looking at yamaha 2800i, noticed its in open frame compared to closed in designs. How does this go for a caravan? Only need it to run AC in the van.

Hi Laurie – great question. The most popular generator models for caravan air-conditioners are the Yamaha EF2400iS and the Yamaha EF2800i. The main difference between the two is that the EF2400iS is the more typical inverter style enclosed generator with sound proofing insulation, meaning its extremely quiet with a noise rating of 54dBA. The EF2800i provides a bit more power, and is in the open frame style (as you pointed out) – which makes it 3kg’s lighter, but also means that it has a higher noise level rating at 60dBA as it doesn’t have the enclosed casing.

Choosing between the two, obviously people first look at their power requirements and opt for a generator which best suits their appliance’s power draw (noting that both the Yamaha EF2400iS and Yamaha EF2800i will run mostly all caravan air con models on the market). Then it comes down to how particular you are with noise level; the Yamaha EF2800i is not considered “loud” like a conventional trade generator, but it is just not as quiet as the EF2400iS, which is super quiet.

The other notable feature of the EF2800i is its 11 litre long range fuel tank; meaning it can run for 17 hours at quarter load. This makes it also popular for backup power at home (running fridges etc.) or for off-grid weekender cabins etc.

Hope that helps - Cheers, Steve.

  • My product manual for my inverter generator mentions an 'earthing wire / earthing stake' - do I need this?

Hi there, good question. This is mentioned in generator manuals and is a safety feature that will earth the generator. You do have the option to fit an 'earth wire'. Connecting an earth wire and stake is an option available to customer's that purchase a generator.

An earth wire and stake are not supplied with generators that we sell and is application specific. In practice, we do not see customer's do this, especially for inverter generators. It can be something that is implemented for more specialized generators on mining work sites for example...for common applications, it is not common practice to 'earth' the generator with a wire and stake. If you are in doubt, and you have a specialized generator requirement that may need 'earthing', please consult an electrician. Hope that helps.

  • Hi we are looking at going on the road (nomads) and would like to have a idea on what size generator to run a Caravan A/C and a 185l fridge/freezer? regards Bryan

Hi there, great question. The item that will draw the most power will be your Caravan A/C unit - it would be a good idea for you to contact the manufacturer of your A/C unit, speak to their technical dept. and find out what size generator they recommend for your particular model. We find that the quality Caravan A/C brands such as Dometic, Air Command, Coleman, Denso etc. are very helpful.

In our experience, most Caravan A/C units will require a starting wattage of around 2000 to 3000 watts. So, the most popular generator models to run your Caravan A/C unit are the Yamaha EF2400iS and the Yamaha EF2800I.

Some smaller and newer/more efficient Caravan A/C models can run on the Yamaha EF2000iS. Again, once you have spoken to your A/C manufacturer, you will be best placed to make the call, however we find that most caravan owners will opt for a 2400watt or 2800watt inverter generator model for two reasons: 1) it gives them some extra power capacity for other small appliances if required, and 2) in hotter environments, any generator's capacity is slightly de-rated, so having a generator with slightly more capability than you need can be very useful as the ambient temp gets well into the 30 degrees and above temperatures.

As for your 185L caravan fridge-freezer, this will not draw much power. Most quality upright caravan fridges will only draw around 100 watts (give or take). Thank you.

  • Is there a way to shut off the petrol supply so I can run the carburetor dry?

Yes, all the Yamaha generators have a fuel valve shutoff (petcock) allowing you to switch off the fuel whilst the generator is operating so the remaining fuel in the carburetor runs dry.

This feature is especially popular if you intend to store your generator in a car, as the petrol fumes ill not permeate through the vehicle thanks to the shutoff valve.

  • What size generator would handle my Caravan air con? The unit has a nominal cooling capacity of 3.0 kW and run at a frequency of 50 Hz at at all times.

Hi - sizing the right generator for caravan air-conditioning units is a very common question. Firstly, you need to find out the starting (peak) watts of your particular unit; we suggest the best way to do this is to contact the manufacturer of your air-con unit and their technical department will be able to inform you what the exact starting wattage of your model is. For many common air-con manufacturers such as Ibis Air Command, Dometic, Coleman, Mitsubishi etc. the technical departments have tested their range of units against leading portable generator models and can advise what size generator will best do the job.

For the vast majority of popular caravan air-conditioning units, the advised generator size is 2.4kVA to 2.8kVA. The most popular generator model is the Yamaha EF2400iS - it is a great performer for caravan use (including running caravan air-con units) and was rated by Caravan & Motorhome on Tour as the best Caravan Generator. For people that want more power, the Yamaha EF2800i or the Yamaha EF3000iSE are good options.

Just remember that each caravan air-con model is different with slightly different power draw requirements, so doing your research is good practice. Other things to consider is the power draw of any other appliances you also intend to run, along with noting that external factors such as high temperatures (above 30°C) and running long extension leads will slightly de-rate any generator's power capacity. Overall we recommend you size the right generator for your air-con and appliances (by following the steps outlined above), ensuring you also have a bit of power capacity up your sleeve if required. Thanks

  • Hi, just wondering whether the EF2400is and EF2800i are made in Japan or China? Also, I have a EF2000is bought from you and am wondering if it could be connected with either of the above? Cheers

Hi Andrew, the Yamaha EF2400iS and EF2800i models are made in Japan.

In terms of parallel connection, this is possible for the EF2000iS and the EF2400iS - only these two models in the Yamaha Inverter Generator range have the parallel connection capability. Note that you need to connect two of the same models for it to work...so with your existing Yamaha EF2000iS, you would need to connect it (via the Yamaha Parallel Twin Tech Cables) to another EF2000iS, and this would almost double the power output. You can't connect an EF2000iS with an EF2400iS.

    Many thanks.

  • I'm considering this generator for home backup. How much is it to get an electrician to fit a transfer switch to my home so this generator can power (part) of my house during a blackout?

Hi Anthony, great question. You've certainly identified a popular generator model for home backup power. In terms of cost for an electrician to install a transfer switch to your home, the short answer is; it depends. Not every home install is identical in terms of works required, switch configurations etc.

However, to give you an idea, click HERE for a video from a My Generator customer who had a local electrician install a transfer switch to enable the power supply to their house to be transferred to a portable generator when there is a mains blackout. You can see from the video that the transfer switch install cost was around $600. We would suggest this is a pretty good price, and perhaps indicative of a straightforward install job. We have heard of higher install costs than this for other jobs, usually requiring more configuration works.

My advice would be to get a quote from your local electrician. They can also help advise what size generator best fits your particular home backup requirements. Many thanks!

  • Good morning, Karen here from Semaphore Caravan Pk Adelaide SA. We are getting ready for our trip around Australia. We would like to know what size Yamaha Generator would best suit us? We have solar panel set up, duel battery among other things.

Hi Karen, to be sure you get the right generator for your Caravan trip, its best to know in a bit more detail exactly what you intend to be running. If you just want the generator as backup option to charge your batteries and a few other small appliances then the most popular generator models are the Yamaha EF1000iS and the Yamaha EF2000iS.

However, if you also want a generator to run appliances with a larger draw such as a Caravan air-conditioner, a microwave, a washing machine, a standard kettle etc. etc. then you may need a larger generator such as the Yamaha EF2200iS, the Yamaha EF2400iS, the Yamaha EF2800i or the Yamaha EF3000iSE. In this instance you would need to know the exact starting and running wattages of these larger appliances to ensure you get the right sized generator for the particular make/model of appliances you have. The starting wattage of these appliances is the most important number to obtain. You can do this by checking the product manual or contacting the manufacturer of the appliance (we find this is the safest/most effective approach).

I hope that helps - if you still need help, please feel free to give us a call on 1300 400 122! Thanks.

  • I plan to leave the generator outside my long term camp setup, what's your best inverter generator that can handle all weather conditions, especially heavy rain?

Hi there, sounds like a nice set up! The short answer is that electricity and water don’t mix. Whilst we are aware that some people run their inverter gensets in all weather conditions, it is not recommended as safe or best practice for your equipment, as inverter generators do not come with weatherproof outlets as standard.

Ideally, you would somehow shelter your generator from the rain. But just remember that fully enclosing your generator whilst its running is not an option - generators need fresh air intake for the engine to run and they emit carbon dioxide, so they should never be contained. Overall, some rain protection but also room for fresh air intake and fume emission is what you need.

  • How frequently do I have to change the motor oil? Product info says to change it after the first 20hrs, and after this first change?

Hi, after the first oil change, the recommended oil change time frame is every 6 months or 100 hours of use. When in doubt always consult our user manual for recommended maintenance. Thanks!

  • Will this generator run the pump for my house water system?

Hi, that is a tough question to answer without knowing more details about your pump. Water pumps come in a range of sizes and some smaller pumps can run on a small 2000 watt generator, whereas some house pumps would need around 6000 – 8000 watts or more!...electric pumps are notorious for having quite high starting loads. So, you would need to find out the peak load (in Watts) required to start your pump. If you cannot find the starting load from the product manual or data plate, you could contact the manufacturer of your pump, or engage an electrician to take a reading.

Once you have that all important stating load amount for your pump, you can then choose the right sized generator to run your pump.

  • Is the warranty on this product a factory warranty from Yamaha?Â

Yes, you get the full manufacturer’s warranty from Yamaha Australia which would be covered by any local Yamaha service center that works on generators.

You can find a Yamaha local service agent by clicking HERE

  • How easy is the unit to start? Especially for a female. Can it be converted to a key start?

Hi - The Yamaha Inverter Generator range have very easy recoil start...one small pull for a well functioning generator and it starts. We have sold to many female and elderly customers who do not have any problems.

This EF2800I model cannot be converted to electric start. The next size up in the Yamaha Inverter range, the EF3000iSE comes with electric start. Thank you

  • I wish to buy a generator for power outages as we are on a rural property that relies on power for water. I have looked at the Supa Swift 3600 inverter and the Yamaha EF2800 inverter. Why you rate the Yamaha above the Supa Swift?

Hi Alan, we would recommend the Yamaha EF2800 above the SupaSwift 3600 model because Yamaha are premium brand, built to handle more regular use and come with a longer, 4 year warranty. The SupaSwift is designed for only light / recreational use.

Using the Yamaha EF2800 for small home backup requirements via a manual transfer switch to your home is a very common application for this model of generator. In fact, you can watch this short video of a customer here using the generator for this exact purpose:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=573XoF0ZPP4

    Many thanks

  • What is an "inverter" generator?

Hi Alison, and thanks for your question. An inverter is a lightweight microprocessor that converts power from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). They are a fairly recent advancement in technology from the older style conventional generators. What it means is that the inverter generators produce very clean power which is required to run sensitive electronic equipment such as laptops, mobile phones, camera equipment etc.

The other benefits of inverter generators are that they are typically much smaller and lighter than standard open frame style generators and tend to operate at very low noise levels (less than 60 decibels). Lastly, they are also very efficient; their engine speed automatically adjusts in accordance with the required load, maximising fuel efficiency.

Overall, they are an extremely popular portable power source for camping, caravanning, DIY tasks, small business uses and home power back up. Inverter generators range from around 1000 watts up to 7000 watts.

  • I'm looking at this generator and the eu30iu handi honda, can you please tell me the main differences?

    Hi Anita,

We have a comprehnsive article that compares the Honda eu30iu and the Yamaha EF2800i which you will definitely find helpful. This looks at the specs of each unit in detail: please check out the article here

However, in summary; both generators have their advantages, but with an extended running time, and a much cheaper price tag, the Yamaha EF2800i comes out on top. Again, please have a look at the comparison article for full details.

    Many thanks!
  • Does the generator engine have an over temperature cut out - I plan to operate it in the Pilbara to run my C.Van AC

    Hi Glen,

This generator does not have a high temperature sensor.

The use of the correct weight of oil, keeping the generator in the shade, etc should allow this generator to run without much cause for concern.

  • I plan to place the generator in an enclosure located on rear of my C.Van the enclosure does have vents - will the generator get too hot operating in the enclosure when used for Air Conditioning in the NW of WA

    Hi Glen,

We would never recommend running the generator in an enclosed box.

These generators require as much exposure to air as possible to prevent over heating.

  • G'day guys! I would like to get some advice. I am after a generator for emergency power supply for a water pump, home backup power and DIY projects. Most importantly, I need a reliable generator to run my water pump of 1.7kw with electronic controller.

Hi Marcos - An inverter generator such as this one is going to give you clean, efficient power so you can power any of your sensitive electronic appliances.

The Yamaha 2800i produces a max of 2800w and a rated or continuous output of 2500w. This model also comes with a long-range fuel tank which is handy. The 2800i is the most popular in our Yamaha range for your type of dual purpose application.

The only thing I would point out is that you need to be aware of the starting wattage for the appliances that have electric motors (like power tools and water pumps). The starting wattage can be a lot higher than the running wattage. Sometimes this information isn't always available on the product. You might need to search for this information in the product manual or online, or use a wattage meter to measure this.

You will likely find our Generator Buyer's Guide helpful; this explains in a simple step by step format how to choose the right sized generator for your appliances.

Assuming all the appliances you intend to run (at one time) draw less than 2800w at start up and less than 2500w when running continuous, then the Yamaha 2800i would be a great option.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us on 1300 400 122. Cheers!

  • Whereabouts are the Yamaha service agents located? Thank you.

Hi Martin, Yamaha has over 200 accredited service agents around the country. The following website link has the full list and you can type in your postcode to find the nearest service agent to you: https://generatoryamaha.com.au/where-to-buy/

  • Looking for a generator as home back up when power goes out. Maybe for work around property. We live in a rural location, so needs to run house watertank system and fridge, plus some lights. Will the unit suffice?

Hi Philip, for your type of dual purpose use, the Yamaha EF2800i is a very popular generator. To ensure this unit would be able fulfil your requirements during a power outage and for work around your property, we would recommend that you find out the exact starting and running wattages of all your appliances you intend to run. This information can be found on the product data plate, within the product manual or from the manufacturer of the product.

It would then be a good idea to refer to our Generator Buyer's Guide which explains in a simple step by step format how to choose the right sized generator for your appliances.

Assuming the Yamaha EF2800i can power all your appliances, then it would be a great choice; it is an inverter generator which produces clean power so you can run any electronic equipment, it can run for 17hours at quarter load before needing refuelling (making it great for home backup use) and is easy to move around as it only weighs 29 kilos.

  • Do you guys have some general tips for generator maintenance? Ta

    Hi there - good question, yes, we do! Firstly, as a safety note, always stop the engine and let the generator cool down before starting any maintenance work. The five main general tips are;

    1. Replace engine oil
    2. Check spark plug, replace if necessary
    3. Check fuel level and ensure it is fresh fuel (fuel left for a long time can go "off")
    4. Check air filter, replace if necessary
    5. Clean muffler cover and check spark arrestor

For further maintenance help, you should take your generator to a small engine specialist or an accredited generator service technician.

  • I am told by my electrician that to wire this into my home - the generator must not have a "centre tap" - Can you advise if this has or hasn't?

Hi, these portable generators don’t have a centre tap.

    Many thanks.

  • I am buying a Yamaha Inverter Generator from you. If I plan to not run it for a period of 4-5 months, so should I just use a fuel stabilizer?

Yes, a good fuel stabiliser will keep your fuel fresh during periods when you are not using your generator and in your case this should be fine.

    Other good practice recommendations are:

    • Drain the excess fuel in the carburettor after use. All Yamaha generators have a fuel shut off valve (petcock) that you can switch off while the generator is running to use the residual fuel and ensure it does not sit in the carburettor
    • Start up your generator every few months for a short period to lubricate internal parts of the unit and even apply a small load to the generator ensure everything is in working order for when you need it next.
