    Product Review

It requires some planning and effort when installing this unit, as you need to make sure you can find a spot on the floor of the vehicle where you can cut through the chassis for the outside air intake /output. There are also two drainage holes that need to be cut. I drilled some pilot holes through the chassis in the place it would fit best (not in the way of crossbeams under the vehicle and away from the fuel tank etc), then I used an angle grinder to cut the air intake and output slots, then I used a hole-saw for the two drainage pipes.

Once installed, I tested the cooling and heating modes, it's actually pretty powerful and very quiet when in operation. I also attempted to run the unit off my 1KW inverter running with the vehicle engine on. It was able to operate, however, when the compressor kicked in, it would drain my battery fairly quickly and when it went below 12 volts it would just put the unit into fan-only mode which was fine. It's better to run off a 2kW generator or mains power.

Things to keep in mind: You need an electrician to put an Australian 240-volt plug on the end of the power cable as it comes without an attachment. Also, you need to purchase the ducting separately which is about $130 for 5 metres.

Overall, very happy with the unit and its performance.

    Product Review

The air con unit was very easy to install, it was installed in half a day physically. It then took a few hours to wire up but that is due to my caravan set up. The unit comes with every instruction needed and a simple stencile for holes in the floor, it couldn't have been easier. The unit pumps out a massive amount of air on the lowest fan speed which is great and there is very little vibration even when compressor kicks in, it does have a slight hum but its well worth the cool air in northern Australia. All vents are included and only ducting is required to be purchased. This was a ripper deal and postage was very quick and very reasonably priced.

    Shopping Experience

They were excellent to deal with, i couldnt work out how to group the items (a/c unit and ducting) so that the postage was cheaper, they soon emailed me back telling me how to do it and it saved me a bunch, they even price matched by giving me a voucher code to discount the item which was the cherry on top.

Fantastic website and a pleasure to deal with.

    Product Review

Very good quality, runs well! although not plumbed up in my slide on camper yet. This unit should work well being able to route the three cold air pipes were I want, because when the roof is up the camper is almost split into two areas. This unit is ideal and fairly light as well.

    Shopping Experience

The air conditioner arrived much quicker than I thought it would. I like this company as you can call them as well, many you can't.

Product Faqs

Ask a Question

  • Q:What is the difference between ‘reverse cycle’ caravan air conditioners and ‘heating element’ caravan air conditioners?
    A:

Hi, great question. These descriptions relate to how the heating/cooling works in air conditioners. ‘Heat Exchange’ units use heat exchange to cool and an electrical heat element to warm. It’s not the most efficient heating method, but it works no matter how cold it is outside.

Reverse cycle units are the more common type and they use a compressor whether heating or cooling. This is more efficient method but for some models can be an issue when there’s ice in the outside air.

There are more Reverse Cycle models available and it is the most popular type of RV air conditioner – customers that opt for Heating Element style air conditioners typically plan to spend long periods in cold temperatures.

  • Q:With air conditioner ratings, why are some specifications for the same model different between suppliers and information sources relating to things like cooling capacity?
    A:

Hi, good question. With ratings such as cooling capacity, two different numbers can both be correct – they can just relate to different requirements and conditions.

Often cooling capacity figures displayed for the product are from the electrical rating conditions. The other main method of testing ratings of air conditioners is to ISO5151 standard – this method is under standardised controlled conditions and allows more direct comparison between models.

  • Q:Will the Cromtech 2400w Inverter Generator handle the start up surge on this aircon unit?
    A:

Hi - short answer is yes. The technical departments of RV air conditioning manufacturers (e.g. Dometic, Air Command, Truma etc.) will typically recommend a 2400w or 2800w inverter generator for most RV aircon models.

In our experience, the Yamaha EF2400iS or Cromtech 2400w Inverter Generator are the best generator models to run caravan air-conditioners. These models have the capacity to handle the startup power requirements when the Aircon compressor kicks in.

Of course there are other inverter generator models (slightly bigger or smaller) that customers do use to run their Caravan/Motorhome Air Conditioner - some 2000 - 2200w  or  2800 - 3000w generator models. It can depend on the particular setup of the van... However, as mentioned, the most popular models are the Yamaha 2400w or Cromtech 2400w and this is what we would recommend for an RV Aircon also.

  • Q:What size geni do i need for the truma saphir? I want to put it in the storage compartment in my 5th wheeler as a second air con. Plenty of room.
    A:

    Hi Jack,

We would recommend a minimum generator size of 2400W for the Truma Saphir. Popular generator models that we sell to run RV Air Con Units include:

    Cromtech Outback 2400W inverter generator

    Yamaha EF2400iS inverter Generator

  • Q:Hi My question is the Truma Saphir Comfort air conditioner inverter starting or thermostat control direct on/off switching type? Thanks
    A:

    Hi There

The Truma Saphir Comfort is not an inverter Aircon.

It would use a thermostat control on/off switching.

  • Q:Will my Honda 2kw run this on a short cable?
    A:

    Hi There,

Whilst we don't sell that generator, we'd expect it to run this a/c just fine.

  • Q:can this unit be fixed to a wall .will it work on its side Thanks Marty
    A:

    Hi Marty,

This air conditioner needs to be installed horizontally.

Installing it on the side is not recommended.

  • Q:I don't want to cut a hole in my floor for the vent. Is there an option to vent via ducting through a side wall?
    A:

    Hi There,

Unfortunately these air conditioners need to be vented through the floor sorry.

  • Q:Will the Enerdrive ePOWER 1000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter off a 140ah AGM battery run this system?
    A:

    Hi There,

We would not recommend running the air conditioner off an inverter with that small of a battery bank, sorry.
