Product Q&A

Ask Us a Question
  • Hi, What is the warranty? Also, what are the recommended service intervals? Thanks

Hello, the Warranty is 1 year or 1,000 hours. The recommended servicing is a minimum of 2 years or 200 hours. Your installer can undertake the servicing or you can contact us for more info. Cheers

  • Can you tell me how a Home Standby Generator works?

Hi Matt - The generator utilises an Automatic Transfer Switch (an additional accessory) which detects a power outage, it then safely switches off your mains power and starts the gas powered (LPG or Natural Gas) internal combustion engine which generates mains equivalent power for your house.

Please check the Installation Guidelines under the Product Description on the product page regarding requirements for licensed plumber and electrician professionals undertaking in the installation.

  • Will this unit power my whole house?

Thanks for your question. It depends on the size of your home and how much your combined household appliances will draw. You can get an electrician to take a reading on your house and the overall power it draws. Typically 8kVA to 13kVA will power most things in a standard home, e.g. your lights, fridges, freezer, computer, television, fans, kitchen appliances etc. When you start adding larger wattage appliances on top (e.g. Washing Machines, Dryers, Air Conditioners etc.), then you may need a larger unit. Again, 8 to 13kVA will work for most homes, but it depends on your particular home and the appliances.

  • Who can Install this type of generator? And how much would it cost?

Good question Simon! We can recommend an installer in your local area, so please call us if you would like help in that regard. A licensed plumber for the installation, an electrician for the Transfer Switch and a B licensed plumber to sign off on installation, place a compliance label and submit paper work to AGA.

As for cost, this will depend on where the unit is to be located, how much plumbing is required, site access and travel costs incurred by the installer. On average we recommend you allow around $2,500.

You can find more information relating to Generac Gas installation here: INSTALLATION GUIDELINES and GENERAC GAS TRAIN INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  • As the unit is air cooled what is the maximum ambient temperature that it will remain operational? I am located in Adelaide and the power reliability hear is a joke, especially in summer on hot days.

Hi and thanks for your question -  these units are designed for outside installation and have an all-weather protective enclosure. The units will operate between -29°C and +50°C.

The engine also has 'High Temperature Shutdown' functionality in extreme conditions to prevent unit damage due to overheating.

We have supplied many of these generators to all parts of South Australia with no problems during the summer heat waves. Many thousands have been also installed in hot US areas such as California, Nevada and Texas.

We would have no hesitation in recommending these units for home power backup in South Australia. Many thanks

  • Can this generator be used as a back up for a stand alone solar application? Would it then just be wired to your main power box and work the same way if your battery bank got low?

Hi there - the short answer is yes. While the Generac gas generators are mainly used for back up to home/small business mains power, they can also be used as back up to solar set ups, which some people do. Essentially the generator will automatically start up to re-charge your solar battery bank when they get too low.

You just need to speak to your solar installer to ensure the appropriate connection to your particular solar set up is fitted. The connection will be a 'two-wire' auto start controller and your solar installer/electrician will know the correct type and configuration between your particular solar system/battery bank and the generator. Thanks.

  • What is the difference between Type A and Type B?

The difference is that Type A is an easier and quicker install and can be performed by any certified Gas A installer. Type B is a harder install and is required to be signed off on by a Type B gas installer. The advantage of an end user purchasing a Type A generator is that the install process will be easier, faster and more cost effective.

  • Would you suggest a unit like this for Business backup?

This depends on the size of your business and what you want to power. To give you an idea, for most standard homes, 8kVA to 13kVA is an appropriate size. So for a small business requiring power to run lights, computers and a few other appliances, then a generator in this sized range could be an option. However, for larger requirements you will likely need a larger genset above 15kVA - you can view options in our Stationary Generator Range

We recommend you engage a qualified electrician to undertake a power reading on your business premises to find out what size generator you need.

  • How much does a unit like this cost to run?

This will depend on what you’re paying for gas and how much load is on the unit. We can provide approximate gas consumption rates for each of the units, for example at half load they will consume between 4.7 and 6.1 litres of LPG per hour. Feel free to give us a call for more help with running cost: 1300 400 122

  • What is type A installation?

Domestic and light commercial appliances that have an approval badge from the Australian Gas Association (AGA) are Type A appliances.

  • What happens if I am running on this unit and the house unexpectedly draws more than it can supply?

Hi Jeff, the units are fitted with circuit breakers, which will 'trip' if your appliances draw more power than the max capacity of the generator. This overload  protection trip will stop the unit producing power and will need to be reset/turned back on to supply power again. Thanks

  • Can it operate from LPG?

Hi Mark; Yes they can run on LPG or Natural Gas.

  • Hi Just wondering where the Generac Generator is manufactured? Thanks Martin

Hi Martin, all of the Generac Generator models are manufactured and tested in the USA. Hope that helps, Cheers, Steve.

  • Can the generac generator be operated on a typical Biogas feed supply (Methane 50-75%, CO2 25-50%, Nitrogen 0-10%, H2S 0-2%). If so, I would be interested to know what the fuel consumption per hour would look like.

Hi there - good question!  The maunfacturer do not recommend this. They recommend LPG or mains gas only. Many thanks, Steve.

  • Hello, I have an off the grid system which uses a 2 wire closurw to start a generator when the batteries discharge to a prwsent percentage charge. When the battery charge reaches a preset percentage the closure opens to stop the genny.Does the Generac

    Hi There,

The Generac generators can be set up for offgrid backup situations.

The built in controller has the functionality to be set up for 2 wire on/off programming.

  • 3 questions:* Is it inverter controlled?* Is it pure sine wave?* What is the delay time from when power goes off and generator comes online? And vice versa? (thinking of things like fridge/ freezer needing a delay before restarting)

    Hi There,

The Generac generators do not have an inverter, and are not described as "pure sine".

They use an AVR which regulates the output voltage to +/- 1% preventing any damaging voltage spikes.

There is a programmable start delay of between 2-1500 seconds.

  • I have a security issue with equipment at a remote weekender. Is it ok to install generator in a shed. Shed bay is 12M x 12M with good ventilation

    Hi There,

We would recommend speaking with Genrac for installation infomation.

They can be contacted on 02 8106 3100.

  • Hi Can I please get a turn around time if i purchase a Generac Gas Generator with a 100 amp switch? Thanks

Hi, a Generac Gas Generator will take 1-2 days to prepare for dispatch from the date of order. Then for delivery times, it depends on whereabouts you are located; our Generac models are based in a warehouse in Melbourne and typically delivery times are in the order of 5 - 10 business days, but for exact times to your location, please call us on 1300 400 122. Thanks

  • Can it run on bottled gas?

Hi, yes it can run on bottled LPG Gas or mains Natural Gas. You can see the run time capacity on LPG within the specifications tab and within the dowloadable product brochure. Thanks.

  • Can this generator be used as a primary power source?

No. This generator is Standby Generator, designed for power backup.

  • How noisy is this generator?

The rated noise level is 60 decibels at 7 meters.  About the same as an idling car or air conditioning unit. Thanks.

  • Does the unit turn on automatically in the event of a power failure? And does the unit automatically switch back to mains power when mains power is restored?

Yes to both questions. It will also self test weekly (without shutting off power).

  • Does this come with a starter battery?

Yes, it is included in the price of the generator.

  • Does this come with a type A gas train?

Yes, when ordering, we will enquire as to whether an LPG or NG train is required for the install.
