CREATE THE ULTIMATE POWER SYSTEM: Pair the PowerTop with the ultra lightweight and durable 180w BainTuff Foldable Solar Blanket, plug the blanket directly into the PowerTop and it will supply up to 10A of reliable power to keep the PowerTop’s 135ah AGM battery charged. While on the move, a DC-DC charging system like the CTEK D250SA will recharge, maintain, and extend the life of your auxiliary battery via your alternator, or utilise the solar input while set up at camp, giving you the freedom to live the good times for longer.

Always charge before use. Correct charging will ensure you get the best life out of your PowerTop Battery. We don’t recommend deeply discharging the PowerTop, as this will reduce the life of the battery. It is recommended to use a charging source to keep the battery topped up – the perfect off-grid option is to utilize either method of solar or alternator charging.

Never store a battery in a discharged state. Sulphation can occur when the battery is left around for long periods in an unused state causing it to lose capacity. Letting the battery voltage fall lower than 50% or 12.4 should also be avoided.

Store in a dry cool place, and always fully charge your PowerTop via the AC internal charger before each use.

It’s important to remember that although your battery may be rated at 135amphour, exceeding a depth-of-discharge beyond 50% won’t do it any good. For a 135 amp-hour battery, you should base your amp draw calculations off a 67 amp-hour of useable capacity. 67 amp-hours of usable capacity would mean that you could discharge 1 amp of current for 67 hours, or 10 amps for 6.7 hours etc – all depending on the amp draw of your accessories.

Product Faqs

Ask a Question

  • Q:Can you supply a regulator that supports lifpo4 lithium battery chemistry?

    Hi There,

We can only supply the solar blanket with the included regulator sorry.

  • Q:Is this solar blanket OK to use with our lithium batteries?

    Hi There,

There should be no reason why you could not use this blanket with lithium batteries, though the PWM that is supplied with the panel will not be suitable for charging the batteries.

  • Q:I am plugging into a BMS with a built in PVM. Can I buy only the blanket and save on the PVM and cables as I do not require them?

We can only supply the full package. We don't sell the blanket on it's own without cables etc.

  • Q:Can the Powertop be charged by 2 sources at once? (solar and 240v or solar and alternator?)

The Powertop is a plug and play system, so it can be used as a secondary battery and be plugged into your battery and solar at the same time.

Depending on your DCDC charger, some can charge simultaneously, but normally the Powertop will automatically choose the charging method.

If you have the solar plugged into the red Anderson while driving, it will choose alternator charge until the vehicle is switched off.

  • Q:Can I use the Powertop as a Dual Battery system?

Yes the Powertop can be used as a dual battery.  With it's multiple inputs, it can be plugged into solar and alternator at the same time, and the Powertop will automatically choose the best power source to draw from.

When the ignition is turned off, it will auotmatically default to solar if available.

  • Q:Can I replace the internal battery with a standard AGM at some point in the future, or is it a custom size?

The internal battery is a specific size to the Powertop.  If a replacement battery was required you would need to get the specific battery for the Powertop which can be supplied through My Generator and Bainbridge.

It is a ten minute job to change over and has two screws each side then just the positive and negative terminals on battery.

  • Q:Do I need to have a DCDC charger for the powertop unit to work?Or do I just have to connect the the main battery to the unit ?(a VCR is integrated in the unit I understand)Thanks Alain

    Hi There,

The unit can be charged via DC in multiple ways.

    • Fitted 3x 50A Anderson type Connectors
    • Red: Solar/External (12V solar panel input can be unregulated)
    • Blue: Vehicle Charge Input connection
    • Grey: Load connection to and from battery
      • Protected by 50A thermal self-resettable breaker
      • Can be used for external higher power regulated output from a AC charger, DC-DC charger or solar power source to charge the battery
  • Q:Can i have it plugged into my vehicle Dc-Dc charger while travelling and have multiple items being charged as well as my on board fridge.

    Hi There,

You can certainly connect the powertop to your dc/dc charger!

This is actually the preferred method to charge the battery whilst the vehicle is running.

  • Q:How do I charge the Power Top when the battery is dead?

You have to charge the Power Top through an external charger through the Grey Anderson plug.

  • Q:Can I jump-start my car from the PowerTop?

Unfortunately the PowerTop is not designed to jump-start a car. The unit has a 50amp current limit inside which is not enough to jump-start a vehicle.

  • Q:Can I charge from an external ciga-socket fitted in my car?

This is not recommended as the PowerTop start-up charger may blow the fuse in the ciga-socket. However, some vehicles have ciga plugs rated up to 15amp, if they are rated this high it can be charged with it.

  • Q:Does the Powertop have a solar power regulator?

Yes, the internal solar regulator is using a voltage control relay system.

    Solar panel unregulated = Red

    Solar panel regulated = Grey

  • Q:Why does the Powertop flick between boost and float while charging?

This is standard operation on the 2nd and 3rd model. The lights are regulated by voltage which toggles towards the end of the charge cycle. The toggling happens when the battery is almost fully charged.

  • Q:Can I use the sockets on the front of the Powertop if I am charging?

No, using the sockets at the front while charging through the 240v socket will result in the battery not charging, and draining through use.

However, one can do so if you use an external charger (around 15amps) plugged into the Grey Anderson socket, or a larger solar panel (at least 150 watts or bigger) plugged into the Red Anderson socket.

Either will supply enough current to sustain battery charging while using appliances.

  • Q:How do I stop the alarm going off on the Powertop?

You can’t other than keeping the battery charged up. The alarm goes off at 12.0 volts or less.

Ideally you should not drain the battery below 12.4 volts DC to get the best life from it.

  • Q:What is the highest voltage the Powertop will reach?

14.2 volts is usually the maximum voltage your Powertop will reach.

  • Q:Can I remove the screws and open up the Powertop?

No, the PowerTop is designed to be a self-contained unit, removing any screws voids the warranty of the unit.

  • Q:What’s the difference between Mono & Polycrystalline solar cells?

There's actually not a whole lot of difference when it comes to Caravan, RV and Camping applications to be honest. They are different cell types and are more relevant for home grid tied roof top.

You will read that poly are better in low light conditions and mono are more efficient. But for roof top caravan's the difference is negligible.

The most important thing is to get a well-constructed roof top panel from a quality brand and get the right sizing for your application.

  • Q:What size battery charger do I need for my lead acid battery I have in my camper?

A good battery charger rule of thumb for charging a lead acid battery, is using a charger with output current (amps) of 10-20% of the battery total stored capacity (Ah).

So, for example if the battery is 12V 100Ah, the charger need to be minimum of 10A and maximum of 20A.  Often splitting the difference at 15% (so a 12V ~15A charger) is a good option. Happy charging!
